Understanding The Basics About Linguistics

Linguistic is the scientific study of languages. We all know how important language is to us. Without using a specific language it would become difficult to communicate with each other. Therefore, linguistics is also an important part of Communication studies.

Humans have used languages to communicate with each other from the Neanderthal days. In the beginning, it was the sign languages (gestures), then pictorial language (writing and drawing on cave walls) and slowly they learned to use specific sounds to signal something. These sounds later developed in what we know today as language.

The Basic Things You Need To Know About Linguistics

History Of Linguistics

The study of Linguistics was motivated when there was a need to understand the Grammar of languages. The history of linguistics specifies that it was the Grammar of Sanskrit (Ancient India) or the Grammatical Tradition during the Hellenistic period that may have given birth to the scientific study of languages. During the middle ages, the grammar of Chinese, Arabic and Hebrew languages became important. It was during the same time the religious books or pamphlets were developed which needed the study of languages in order to spread the religion.

Why Do We Need To Study Linguistics?

Linguistic is a subject which helps one to understand language. When one understands the use of certain words or sentences in a language, it becomes easier to understand many other contexts. For example, when one studies the language used in political speeches or words used in propaganda media, it becomes easier to know about the intention of the speaker and the underlying motives. In this way, linguistics is important not only as a single subject but for other subjects such as History, sociology, philosophy, politics and more.

What Are The Branches Of Linguistic Subject?

Linguistics is a vast subject. Like other disciplines, it also has several branches with their own names and specific field of study. Some of them are as follows.

  • Phonetics: Study of physical sounds of human speech. It is concerned with the physical aspects of speech sounds and their various perceptions by the human mind.
  • Phonology: Study of the function of the sounds in languages. It is concerned with the study of accent, syllables, structure, stress and more which are important characteristics of a language.
  • Morphology: Study of words in a language.
  • Syntax: Study of sentence structure in languages. The words are not arranged in the same manner in every language to form a sentence. For different language the sentence formation methods are different. The syntax is the component of linguistic that helps us to learn that!
  • Semantics: Study of the meaning of the words and sentences in all aspects. Semantics deals with whatever one understands after a meaningful combination of certain words or sentences in a language.

The main purpose of the linguistic study is to understand human communication and thus understand humans. A degree in linguistics helps one to work in various areas like forensics, machine translation, speech synthesis, naming and fields of writing and publishing.
