Understanding Neuro-Linguistic Programming

Neuro-Linguistic Programming, What Is It?

Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is a way to understand speech, personal growth, and psychotherapy. It was created in the 1970s by John Grinder and Richard Bandler in California, the United States. In general, NLP’s founders think there is a link between brain activity (neuro-), language (linguistic), and habits learned by practice (programming). Also, that one can alter these to meet specific goals. Bandler and Grinder also dare that NLP practice can “model” the skills of notable people, and grant public access to them. They insist as well that, NLP can treat severe problems such as despair, fears, learning ailments, and tic disorders. Also, It can be used to treat myopia, allergy, and the common cold, all in a single session.N

The Enigma

NLP (or neuro-linguistic programming) is backed by some firms that organize seminars and workshops on management training for jobs. However, no scientific proof supports the claims made by NLP advocates, and it brands itself as a pseudo-science. Scientific studies claim that NLP basis itself on outdated data of working of the brain. That, and also it is not amicable with modern theories and contains many factual errors. Besides, studies also found that all research aiding NLP had vital flaws. Moreover, there were more studies of a much higher degree that failed to show the “claims” made by Grinder, Bandler, and other NLP members. Despite this, some hypnotherapists still practice NLP.

The Three Elements Of NLP

1. Subjectivity

In the words of Bandler and Grinder:

  • Every person has a biased experience of the world. These individual images of experience take shape in terms of five senses and language. In other words, our personal conscious experience is in terms of the native notions of vision, sound, thinking, smell, and taste. For this case, if we think about a task, we will “see” images, “hear” sounds, “taste” flavors, “feel” emotions, “smell” odors and think in a language. Further, it claims that these subjective models of experience have a clear structure, a pattern. It is in this sense that NLP may define itself as the study of the structure of personal reality.
  • Analysis of behavior can be done in terms of these individual models. Conduct is broadly thought to include oral and non-verbal interaction. Be that clumsy, un-adaptive, or “diseased” behavior or a capable or skilled behavior.
  • One can change a habit by altering these sense-based biased models.

2. Consciousness

Neuro-linguistic programming or NLP relies on the idea that our minds branches into conscious and unconscious parts. Those models that occur outside of one’s memory make up what we know as the “unconscious mind.”

3. Learning

.Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) uses copying for learning, termed modeling. Besides, It is said to be able to code and reproduce one’s prowess in skill in any field of activity. Likewise, an essential part of the coding process is a reduction in the flow of the sensory images. These images are a biased reality of the person during the action of the task.
