Richard Bandler can be called the eccentric co-founder of Neuro-Linguistic Programming. During the 1970s, He came up with the model of Virginia Satir- Family Therapy while working in close collaboration with John Grinder. He also worked with Milton Erickson, the legendary hypnotherapist and Fritz Perls- the Father of Gestalt Therapy and developed a communication model called Meta Model. He had good knowledge of mathematics, theoretical psychology, sound engineering, and computing. It is only because of this knowledge that he was able to grab a completely different perspective of the world from Grinder.
Bandler And His Work In The Field Of NLP
There was an unpleasant fragmentation from Grinder and also legal problems regarding intellectual property of NLP. After that, Bandler developed Neuro-Hypnotic Repatterning and Design Human Engineering. Proper research and application of different submodality patterns are a dominant theme in all his works. Bandler, in different situations, has been described as arrogant, intimidating, and funny while being a dynamic genius at the same time. His personality was colorful, both as a person and as the creator of NLP. He was mysterious, charismatic, intense, controversial, and brilliant at the work he did.
Bandler is popular for the co-creation of Neuro-Linguistic Programming along with John Grinder. However, the process of creation of NLP also found good support from a person called Frank Pucelik. Robert Dilts, who also worked with Grinder and Bandler in creating NLP, is of the view that Bandler was unafraid to try new things. He was confident enough and it is only because of this reason that he appeared arrogant. Bandler had an otherworldly and aloof expression. His way of looking at the world was different. His attitude and stare could be menacing if in any case he felt manipulated, disrespected or crossed. All these qualities together produced a kind of charming atmosphere. The aura was one of belied and deep sensitivity, playfulness, compassion, and humor.
Bandler’s Work Balance With Grinder
NLP came into being when Bandler, a student from the University of California in Santa Cruz, listened to and chose parts of the taped therapy schedules of Fritz Perls- a gestalt therapist. Bandler has also pointed out that he examined specific sentence structures and worlds that facilitated the appreciation of the therapeutic suggestions given by Fritz. He then moved on to Grinder – a linguistics professor, and together they study Fritz’s utterances while observing the work of another therapist called Virginia Satir. Grinder and Bandler then came up with the Meta Model for accumulating information and for challenging the underlying thinking and language of the client.
The Meta Model
The Meta Model was made available in 1975. There were two volumes namely: The Structure of Magic I: A Book About Language and Therapy. The second volume was named The Structure of Magic II: A Book About Communication and Change. The authors vented out their beliefs of therapeutic magic as used by Satir and Perls in these books.
Richard Bandler was instrumental in framing the term NLP or Neuro-Linguistic Programming. He did this for making the individuals learn about the language of the mind.
