Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a system of self-help that has been used by millions of people around the world. Philip Zimbardo, a doctor, did a famous experiment in the 1980s in which he asked a group of people to participate in an experiment with people from both the ‘devil’ angel’ sides of the same coin. Both sides had no control over their actions. In fact, no one knew who was a ‘devil’ or an ‘angel.’
NLP believes that everyone has three personality styles: the hero, the high-performing individual, and the person who is in control. So, NLP teaches its practitioners to get these three people in the room together. It does this by creating a neutral atmosphere for the sessions. In many sessions, the room becomes the opposite of what is required.
On the neutral side, the voices are always soft, with a whispery quality and the verbal acrobatics come before the vocal personality. When asked to speak, the person finds it hard to force their voice and speak. It’s as if they are constantly on guard – feeling the fear of speaking.
The group members are then asked to read passages. The passages are designed to make the person feel scared. As a result, the person is forced to speak and perform on the same level as the people from the ‘devil’ side.
The next step in the process is to talk. It’s also amazing how well they can talk when they’re not being frightened. They seem to speak as if the other person’s fear was never there.
NLP has gone on to become one of the most popular self-help systems in the world. The theory is that we are all unique in some way. Each of us has certain strengths and weaknesses. By using techniques that are non-threatening, we can unleash our hidden talents.
One of the more interesting findings is that reading comprehension is boosted. When two people use the techniques that are only mildly threatening, they tend to be more like each other when they read and listen to the same material. Once they move past that, they start talking at cross purposes. This is because the person who was on the ‘devil’ side of the neutral group has been so open and allowed that side of themselves to blossom.
Know More About Neuro-Linguistic Programming
NLP is not about imposing ‘hell and heaven’ on you. If you believe that, you don’t understand NLP. This is not about telling you that you’re a god, that you’re powerful, or that you’re a saint.
The best way to think about NLP is to ask yourself, ‘What do I want to become?’ And, ‘What’s it going to take to get me there?’ NLP is not a miracle cure.
Brain fitness is a major part of NLP. NLP is much more concerned with how our brains work as opposed to which parts of our brains. Neuro-Linguistic Programming is about helping us use our brains to make sense of our lives.
One of the most critical pieces of NLP is the ‘reading away’ method. The subconscious mind is largely unknown to us. The subconscious can help us reach our goals and overcome obstacles in our lives.
Before starting any course of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, you should have some knowledge of your own personality. You need to be able to define for yourself what kind of person you want to be. Whether it’s a marketing specialist, a writer, a singer, or a housewife – your personality will determine your NLP success.
