Natural Language Processing(NLP) is a field that already started in 1950. And also the goal is to make machines understand our language. Researchers at that time actually thought that we would have speaking machines in 1960. Additionally, as you can see, they were a bit off with their plan. We are still not there yet, but we made tremendous progress in the last 10-15 years, mainly through the help of better computers and more data available.

Also, if one had to break down NLP to one equation it would be:

NLP = Computer Science + Artificial Intelligence + Computational linguistics.

What are the goals of NLP?

There are 2 kinds of natural language we as humans and also computers have to deal with. One is speech, which is way older than text. Both have different difficulties. Especially text became very important since we have all these social media. Tasks involve text understanding, text summarization, human language generation, translation, and so on.

On the other hand, we have speech recognition and things like text to speech translation, so that the computer can read for you. Another thing is speaker disambiguation, like who is talking at which point. We, as humans, are quite good at being able to differentiate different voices while computers have troubles with it.

What_Is The Need Of Natural Language_Processing?

In my opinion, it boils down to simplifying life. Besides, we live in a world that becomes more and more connected with technology. Additionally, we have more and more human-computer_interaction. Also, do you remember how information gathering was before Google? Also, you had to go to libraries or Lexicals to get your information. Nowadays, therefore you type things into Google, and most of the time, you get pretty decent results. In the future, we will have robots. And also if we want to integrate them into our life correctly, they should be able to speak.

So far, most of the interaction is that we type our things into the machines. That’s quite tedious and fairly slow. Using your hands to communicate with your computer is slow. Typing this answer takes me much more time than just dictating it. I would love to dictate it, but the computer doesn’t understand me correctly. Speech would be faster and allow higher output as you talk quicker than you type. Hence we want to do NLP. It is not easy for machines to figure out the grammatical structures. Still, I think grammar is entirely artificial and man-made, and for speaking a language, it is not necessary to know the correct syntax. Funny enough, machines do not really need grammar.

One more point is sentiment_analysis. We also, as humans, use words to describe sentiment, and therefore, we have some feeling. And also some meaning behind it, some intuition that machines do not have yet.
